The Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition (TASSC) International is looking for legal interns to help the Staff Attorney of the Pro Bono Asylum Program (PBAP) prepare and successfully complete asylum claims for survivors of torture.
PBAP is looking for several legal interns that seek to learn how to prepare asylum applications and represent clients at the asylum office and in immigration court, while providing trauma-informed care. The work will be largely substantive, but will also include some administrative work like preparing case files. The substantive work will include conducting intake interviews with potential new clients, helping the clients prepare personal statements to submit with their asylum applications, aiding clients in the collection and review of evidence, researching immigration laws and recent cases to aid in preparing a client’s case, researching conditions within particular countries, meeting with clients to prepare for the asylum interview, and potentially attending the asylum interview or court hearing with the client. PBAP will provide comprehensive training on all of these activities throughout the internship all work will be carried out under the supervision of the Staff Attorney at TASSC.
To fill this position, PBAP is looking for individuals that have shown an interest, or taken previous coursework, in immigration law. However, PBAP will also consider high performing students without previous immigration experience. Applicants must be willing to learn about and practice trauma-informed care. We seek to prepare asylum applications for survivors while doing everything we can to avoid traumatizing them all over again.
Dates: PBAP is looking for new interns to start training on Monday, January 9th, and stay with PBAP for at least the spring semester. Applications are due by Friday, December 2nd, at 11:59 PM.
