Making A Case For Accountability

Almost every member of TASSC, whether we are in Latin America, Africa or Asia, can remember being told: "Scream as loud as you want. No one will ever hear you." We were blindfolded, our mouths covered with tape, our voices taken away.  While we were being tortured, we were made into objects and depersonalized as we were abused.

That's why it is so very important to us, as survivors, to speak out and act, to be subjects again. We need to speak out. We want to talk about what happened to us. Holding people accountable for torture is extremely important to us. We were deeply involved -- and deeply opposed to -- policies of the Bush Administration that had lent legitimacy to torture, whether at Abu Ghraib or Guantanamo. Becoming political actors turned out to be a real part of our healing.

News From the International Survivor Network

Last month, we announced that TASSC was establishing an INTERNATIONAL SURVIVOR NETWORK FOR TRUTH AND JUSTICE. Already we have heard back from survivors from three continents who have responded to our initial e-mail communication. We are looking forward to strengthening this network and responding to suggestions. Many thanks to each of you who responded.

Yet we do not have to travel far to discover that this global network of survivors is quite present here in the Washington DC Metropolitan area, and in many cities throughout the United States. Recently, more than thirty-five survivors from a dozen different countries met at the TASSC office on a Saturday afternoon for what we hope will become a monthly meeting of survivors.

Catholic Sisters Rally in DC Close to the SOA

Sister Alice Zachmann, volunteer at TASSC, joined other sisters, coworkers and friends at the Capitol South Metro station from  7:45 - 9:15 a.m. to bring attention to HR 2567: Latin America Military Training Review Act.  Organizers of the event were SOAW, NETWORK and Sisters of Mercy.  The message on the leaflets was: Ask your Representative to Cosponsor HR 2567 sponsored by Representative James McGovern (MA).and cosponsored to date by 83 additional Representatives.  The bill calls for suspension of authority for the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC/SOA) in the Department of Defense.  See www.soaw.org for more information.
