Psychological and Alternative Healing Support

There are profound psychological consequences for those who have been tortured. Often the scars of physical wounds from torture may not be visible and might well be difficult to document for forensic purposes. Then, a psychological or psychiatric evaluation may be needed.

Furthermore, torturers usually combine physical and psychological methods of inflicting pain. TASSC recognizes that psychotherapy is an appropriate approach for many survivors. We also recognize that, unfortunately, there have been mental and medical health professionals who have worked hand in hand with torturers. In still other cases, the culture of survivors is not amenable to Western psychotherapy.

Therefore, TASSC offers a variety of healing modes with the understanding that survivors themselves will choose a path appropriate to their own healing. TASSC has a great need for mental health and alternative healing volunteers.  To volunteer, please contact Orlando (orlando@tassc.org) or Demissie (demissie@tassc.org)
